چکیده

In one simulation, an artificial neural network was trained to rate the distances between pairs of cities on the map of Alberta, given only place names as input. Distance ratings ranged from 0 (when the network rated the distance between a city and itself) to 10. The question of interest was the nature of the representations developed by the network’s six hidden units after it successfully learned to make the desired responses. Analyses indicated that the network used coarse allocentric coding to solve this problem. Each hidden unit could be described as occupying a position on the map of Alberta, and each connection weight feeding into a hidden unit was related to the distance on the map between the hidden unit and one of the stimulus cities. On its own, a single hidden unit’s response was a relatively inaccurate distance measure. However, by combining all six hidden unit responses in a coarse coding scheme, accurate responses were generated by the network. In a second simulation, a second network was trained to make similar judgements, but was trained to violate the minimality constraint on metric space when trained to judge the distance between a city and itself. An analysis of this network indicated that it too was using coarse allocentric coding.

Representing an Intrinsically Nonmetric Space of Compass Directions in an Artificial Neural Network

The purpose of the article is to train an artificial neural network to make a judgment that is intrinsically antisymmetric, and to determine how such a judgment is mediated by the network’s internal representations. One key component of navigation is judging the distance from one location to another. A second key component of navigation is judging heading – that is, judging the direction from o...

Egocentric versus Allocentric Spatial Memory in Behavioral Variant Frontotemporal Dementia and Alzheimer's Disease.

BACKGROUND Diagnosis of behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) can be challenging, in particular when patients present with significant memory problems, which can increase the chance of a misdiagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Growing evidence suggests spatial orientation is a reliable cognitive marker able to differentiate these two clinical syndromes. OBJECTIVE Assess the int...

Differential hippocampal and retrosplenial involvement in egocentric-updating, rotation, and allocentric processing during online spatial encoding: an fMRI study

The way new spatial information is encoded seems to be crucial in disentangling the role of decisive regions within the spatial memory network (i.e., hippocampus, parahippocampal, parietal, retrosplenial,…). Several data sources converge to suggest that the hippocampus is not always involved or indeed necessary for allocentric processing. Hippocampal involvement in spatial coding could reflect ...

The relationship between allocentric and egocentric frames of reference and categorical and coordinate spatial information processing.

We report two experiments on the relationship between allocentric/egocentric frames of reference and categorical/coordinate spatial relations. Jager and Postma (2003) suggest two theoretical possibilities about their relationship: categorical judgements are better when combined with an allocentric reference frame and coordinate judgements with an egocentric reference frame (interaction hypothes...
